Thailand has legalized gay marriage. With this, Thailand has made history by becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. According to a CNN report, more than 200 gay couples got married in a grand ceremony held at Siam Paragon Shopping Center in Bangkok on Thursday (January 23, 2025).
This law is a major victory for the LGBTQ+ community, which has been fighting for equal marriage rights for more than a decade. The bill was approved by the Parliament of Thailand in 2024 and was approved by King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Now this law gives gay couples the right to marriage registration, financial and medical rights as well as adoption and inheritance.
The Prime Minister called it a ‘historic day’
Thailand’s Prime Minister Pathongtan Shinawatra called it a historic milestone towards equality and inclusion. In a recorded message, he said, “This law reflects the awareness of gender diversity in Thai society and our commitment to equal rights and dignity for all.” On this occasion, he praised the struggle of the LGBTQIA+ community and called it the result of collective efforts. He posted on ‘X’ and wrote, “23 January 2025 – the day of victory of love! This victory is the fruit of the hard work of everyone who fought for gay marriage. Today the rainbow (symbol of LGBTQIA+) flag is flying proudly over Thailand.”
The law came into force in 2024 itself It is worth noting that this historic marriage equality law was formally implemented on 24 September 2024. After the approval of this bill, it was published in the Royal Gazette. The purpose of this bill is to eliminate gender discrimination in society and ensure equal rights for all. This move of Thailand has raised a new hope towards gender equality in the entire region.
