The Andhra Pradesh Assembly approved the bill which provides the right to contest urban local body elections to people who have more than two children.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Monday approved a bill that gives the right to contest urban local body elections to people with more than two children. The AP Municipal Corporation Law Amendment Bill-2024 provides for reversal of the rule that prevents people with more than two children from contesting urban local body elections.

According to a press release, Municipal Corporation Minister P Narayan introduced the bill in the Assembly four days ago and it was passed on Monday without discussion. Municipal Corporation Rules were enacted in 1994 to control population growth in Andhra Pradesh, under which people with more than two children were banned from contesting urban local body elections.

Two bills introduced in state assembly

In fact, the two-child rule for contesting Andhra Pradesh local body elections has been abolished. The government on Wednesday introduced two bills in the state assembly, proposing amendments to the Panchayat Raj and Municipal Administration Acts. The passage of this bill repealed the relevant sections of the law, which made people with more than two children ineligible to contest local body elections.
