Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26 is being presented in the Assembly today i.e. on Friday. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu is presenting the budget. While on one hand the budget is being presented today, on the other hand, assembly elections are to be held in the state in 2026. A big gift has been announced for women in the budget. It has been announced to give “Vidya” free bus service scheme to women. Rs 3,600 crore has been allocated for this scheme. Along with this, Rs 2,200 crore has been allocated for the Chief Minister Rural Road Development Scheme.

Finance Minister Thennarasu is presenting the budget for the second time. This is also the fifth budget of the DMK-led government. According to the report, discussion on the budget may start on March 17. Opposition parties, mainly AIADMK and BJP, have criticized the state government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin for alleged lapses in law and order as well as rising debt, which will be addressed during the budget session. The budget is expected to have several important announcements ahead of the state assembly elections in 2026, including increasing spending and focusing on the social sector. At the same time, the agriculture budget will be presented by Minister M R K Panneerselvam on March 15.

  • The Tamil Nadu budget has allocated Rs 3,500 crore for 1 lakh new people under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Housing Scheme.

Controversy erupts over language and logo

Ahead of the presentation of the budget in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, the Tamil Nadu government replaced the common currency symbol ‘rupee’ with the Tamil alphabet ‘RU’ as the state budget logo, sparking a controversy. State BJP president Annamalai condemned the act and said the DMK was trying to divert attention from more serious issues.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also criticised the government for changing the national currency symbol, saying, “If the DMK has a problem with the ‘rupee’, why did it not oppose it in 2010, when it was officially adopted under the Congress-led UPA government, at a time when the DMK was part of the ruling coalition at the Centre?”
