The CBI will challenge the suspension of Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s sentence in the Supreme Court, after the High Court decided to suspend his life imprisonment sentence.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken a strong stance against the suspension of the sentence of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who was convicted in the Unnao rape case. CBI officials announced on Wednesday that the investigating agency will immediately challenge the Delhi High Court’s decision to suspend Sengar’s life sentence in the Supreme Court.

The Delhi High Court had suspended Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s life sentence and granted him interim relief. The court’s decision came in response to a petition filed by Sengar, in which he sought relief citing his daughter’s wedding and other family reasons.

CBI’s Strong Stance
According to CBI officials, the agency disagrees with the decision and has prepared all the necessary legal documents to challenge it in the Supreme Court. The investigating agency believes that given the gravity of the crime and the sensitive nature of the case, the convict should not be granted such relief.

Kuldeep Sengar Sentenced to Life Imprisonment
It is worth noting that in December 2019, a special court in Delhi convicted Kuldeep Sengar in the 2017 rape case of a minor girl in Unnao. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment (until death) under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was also fined a hefty sum of Rs. 25 lakh.
