The Lucknow Metro project, which will revolutionize the city’s transportation system, has received a new boost. The Ministry of Finance, Government of India, has approved an external loan of ₹2,883.93 crore from the New Development Bank (NDB) for the Lucknow Metro’s East-West Corridor. This approval was granted based on a proposal by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), which will be secured with a sovereign guarantee from the Government of India.
The total project cost is ₹5,801.05 crore, and this funding will help expedite construction. This corridor is part of Phase 1B of the Lucknow Metro, which will stretch 11.165 kilometers from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj. It will include 7 underground and 5 elevated stations, providing improved connectivity to densely populated areas of Old Lucknow, such as Aminabad, Hazratganj, and Durgapuri.
At Charbagh station, it will connect with the existing North-South Corridor, allowing easy interchange for passengers. According to the UPMRC, this will strengthen the city’s urban mobility and facilitate daily commutes for millions of people. The approval process involved a key meeting of the Department of Economic Affairs’ Screening Committee, attended by representatives from NITI Aayog, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and other central ministries.
Two Major Civil Construction Tenders Issued
Manoj Kumar, Special Secretary to the Uttar Pradesh Government, presented the proposal, while Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of the UPMRC, shared the project details and financial plan. The UPMRC has already issued two major civil construction tenders, and other processes are underway. The corporation has previously successfully completed metro projects in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra with support from the European Investment Bank.
Millions of Commuters to Benefit
This new partnership with the NDB will further strengthen the financial framework for metro expansion in Uttar Pradesh. Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of the UPMRC, stated, “The East-West Metro Corridor will further facilitate commuting in Lucknow and benefit millions of commuters. Improved connectivity will also boost economic activity. Like previous projects, we will complete this project in a timely and quality manner.” This development is very important considering the rapidly increasing population of Lucknow and the problem of traffic jam.
