New Delhi: The government on Thursday told Parliament that the number of Indian citizens sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates is 25, but the decision has not been implemented yet. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha. The Ministry of External Affairs was asked whether many Indians are imprisoned in foreign jails for years? Along with this, details of those Indians who are awaiting death sentence abroad were also asked and what efforts have been made by the Government of India to save their lives.

Minister of State for External Affairs told the figure

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said, “According to the information available with the ministry, the number of Indian prisoners, including undertrials, in foreign jails at present is 10,152.” The minister said that the government gives high priority to the safety, security and welfare of Indian citizens lodged in foreign jails. Singh shared data related to 8 countries and also told the number of Indian citizens who have been awarded death penalty, but the decision has not been implemented yet.

Every possible help is given to Indians
According to the data, 25 Indians in the United Arab Emirates, 11 Indians in Saudi Arabia, 6 Indians in Malaysia, 3 Indians in Kuwait and one Indian each in Indonesia, Qatar, America and Yemen have been sentenced to death. He said, “Indian missions / posts abroad provide all possible assistance to Indian citizens who have been sentenced by foreign courts, including the death penalty. Indian missions / posts also provide access to counseling by visiting prisons and follow up their cases with courts, prisons, public prosecutors and other related agencies. Indian nationals in jail are also assisted in exploring various legal remedies including filing appeals, mercy petitions, etc.”

Death sentence given to Indian
The Ministry of External Affairs was also asked whether any Indian has been awarded death penalty in foreign countries in the last five years? Singh said such sentences have been awarded in Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. He informed that in 2024, three Indian nationals each have been awarded death penalty in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. In Zimbabwe, the figure was one. In 2023, five Indians each were awarded death penalty in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, while one Indian was awarded death penalty in Malaysia. He informed that no data is available for the United Arab Emirates as the authorities there have not shared it. According to him, according to unofficial information available with the Indian Mission, no Indian has been awarded death penalty from 2020 to 2024. (Language)
