The central government on Thursday initiated the process to appoint the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Sources have confirmed this. Current Supreme Court Chief Justice BR Gavai will retire from his post on November 23rd next month. According to PTI, people familiar with the appointment process for Supreme Court and High Court judges have stated that CJI BR Gavai will receive the relevant letter to recommend his successor by Thursday or Friday. Who will be the next CJI of the Supreme Court?
After Chief Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant is the most senior Supreme Court judge. He is next in line to become the next head of the Indian judiciary. If Justice Surya Kant’s appointment is approved, he will assume the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on November 24th next month. Justice Surya Kant will serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court until February 9, 2027, or for approximately 15 months.

According to the Memorandum of Procedure, the document that sets out the rules for the appointment, transfer, and promotion of Supreme Court and High Court judges, the post of Chief Justice of India should be filled by the senior-most Supreme Court judge deemed fit to hold the position. To this end, the Union Law Minister will seek the Chief Justice of India’s recommendation for the appointment of his successor at an appropriate time. Traditionally, the letter seeking the recommendation for the appointment of a successor is sent one month before the Chief Justice’s retirement upon attaining the age of 65.
