The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has given four weeks time to the Union Home Ministry to decide on the issue of dual citizenship of Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi Double Citizenship Case: The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has given the Central Government four weeks to take a decision on the dual citizenship of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court has fixed the next date of hearing in this case as 21 April 2024. The Home Ministry had sought eight weeks’ time in this matter.

Actually, the case is based on a petition filed by Shishir, a petitioner from Karnataka, who has sought an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He claims that he has new evidence regarding Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship, including documents and emails received from the UK government.

According to the petitioner, a former UK company, which was formed in 2003 and closed in 2009, had described Rahul Gandhi as a UK citizen in its records. According to Indian law, dual citizenship is not allowed and if an Indian citizen takes citizenship of another country, the Indian citizenship is automatically revoked.

Report sought from Home Ministry
In the last hearing in this case in November 2023, the High Court had directed the Home Ministry to inform about the action taken on the petition. For this, Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey was directed to file a reply. The ministry was earlier given three weeks, but now he will have to submit the report in four weeks.

Case pending in Delhi High Court too
Earlier, a similar petition was also filed in the Delhi High Court. This petition was filed by former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in 2019. He claimed that despite writing a letter to the Home Ministry in this matter, no action was taken.

Response of Rahul Gandhi and Congress
The Congress has always rejected the questioning of Rahul Gandhi’s Indian citizenship. Rahul Gandhi’s sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that “everyone knows that Rahul Gandhi is an Indian and was born and brought up here.” Rahul Gandhi himself has described these allegations as a “conspiracy to tarnish the image”. The Congress says that this is a case motivated by political revenge.
