Court seeks report from government
The High Court has now taken suo motu cognizance of the increasing number of dangerous road accidents in Rajasthan. This is why the court has sought a report from the government on the steps taken to improve road safety. A bench of Justices Anurup Singhi and P.S. Bhati took this step. They also cited the right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution. They stated that recent incidents have compelled the court to place immediate emphasis on road safety.
Several accidents in the state within a month
Rajasthan has witnessed numerous road accidents over the past month, claiming dozens of lives. The court directed the departments, as well as the Additional Solicitor General and Additional Advocate General, to present their views on road safety and public safety issues related to their departments, especially in relation to the untimely deaths.
The court sought responses from both the central and state governments.
The court further stated that it is a matter of grave concern that while the country places great importance on its human resources, widespread apathy and negligence among citizens towards public and road safety is exacerbating social suffering. The facts presented before this court highlight a broader systemic issue that requires judicial attention and direction.
The court expressed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the recent accidents. The entire matter will be heard on November 13. The High Court has also directed the central and state governments to file their responses.
