The ruling BJP in Rajasthan on Sunday expelled its former MLA Gyan Dev Ahuja, who was at the centre of the recent temple ‘purity’ controversy, from the primary membership of the party. The action was taken against Ahuja following an inquiry by the BJP’s disciplinary committee, the party order said. It said BJP state president Madan Rathore has ordered the termination of Ahuja’s primary membership of the party for indiscipline.
What is the matter of temple purification?
Ahuja had stirred a controversy earlier this month when he “purified” the Ram temple in Alwar by sprinkling Gangajal there. Earlier, Congress leader Tikaram Julie had participated in a pran pratishtha ceremony there. Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot had described Ahuja’s act as an “insult” to Dalits.
“I have not done any anti-Dalit work”
On Sunday, Ahuja deposed before the BJP’s disciplinary committee and later speaking to reporters said, “I have not done any anti-Dalit work.” He alleged that the BJP had expelled him after falling prey to the propaganda tactics of the Congress. Ahuja accused senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, of defamation and said he would file a case in the matter.
After performing the sanctity rituals at the Ram temple, Ahuja had said that Congress leaders had no moral right to participate in such ceremonies as the party leadership had questioned the existence of Lord Ram and boycotted the foundation ceremony held in Ayodhya last year. He also said that his move had no “Dalit” connection. Tiktaram Jhuli was present during the foundation ceremony at the Ram temple in a residential society in Alwar.
