Tavsya, the second warship of the P1135.6 additional follow-on frigate project indigenously built by the Government of India, was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). ‘Tavsya’ was launched into the water by Neeta Seth in the presence of Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth on Saturday.
Sanjay Seth said on the occasion of the launch that this is a defining moment in India’s naval history, reflecting our technological capabilities and unwavering commitment to self-reliance.
Increased strength of Indian Navy
Referring to the successful localization of various systems on the ship, Sanjay Seth said that the launch of Tavsya is not only a step forward for the Indian Navy, but a big leap for India’s strategic defense ambitions.
Named after Bhima’s mace
Tavsya is named after the mace of Bhima, the great warrior of Mahabharata. The contract for the construction of two warships under this project was signed between the Ministry of Defense and Goa Shipyard Limited on 25 January 2019. The first warship Triput was launched on 23 July 2024.
Capable of dealing with submarine and air attacks
Triput and Tavasya are warships equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, capable of dealing with surface, submarine and air attacks. Their length is about 125 meters and draft is 4.5 meters, while their displacement is about 3600 tonnes. These warships will run at a maximum speed of 28 knots i.e. about 52 km/h.
Equipped with weapons and sensors
Triput and Tavasya are being equipped with indigenous equipment, weapons and sensors under the Self-reliant India campaign. A large amount of equipment manufactured by Indian defense production units has been used in these ships. Which will help in increasing defense production capacity, employment generation and promoting technical efficiency in the country.
