The United Nations (UN) has once again imposed sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Iran’s problems have once again worsened. The United Nations (UN) has reimposed sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. These sanctions include an arms embargo, a ban on nuclear-capable missiles, an asset freeze, and travel restrictions. Iran’s economy is already facing difficulties. The impact of these sanctions will be even more severe.

This move was initiated by major European countries, while Tehran has warned of a strong response. These sanctions have been reimposed on Iran under the snapback mechanism, which was included in the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers.

What are the sanctions?
The 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) contained a snapback provision. Under this agreement, if any party proves that Iran is not complying with the agreement, all previous sanctions on Iran can be reimposed within 30 days, without the approval of the UN Security Council. This includes freezing Iran’s assets, a ban on arms sales, restrictions on its ballistic missile program, travel bans, and a ban on the transfer of nuclear technology. Consequently, sanctions have now been reimposed on Iran.

Britain, France, and Germany have accused Iran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal, which was intended to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

What did Iran say about nuclear weapons?

However, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke at the UN General Assembly in New York regarding nuclear weapons. He stated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. Pezeshkian said, “I declare once again before this House that Iran has never attempted to build a nuclear bomb and never will. We do not want nuclear weapons.” Despite his statement, sanctions have now been reimposed.

The breakdown of this decade-old nuclear deal could increase tensions in the Middle East, especially since just three months ago, the US and Israel bombed Iranian nuclear sites.

Regarding this, the foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany issued a statement saying, “We urge Iran and all countries to fully comply with these resolutions. Our countries will continue diplomatic channels and dialogue. Reimposing UN sanctions is not the end of diplomacy.”

Russia opposed
However, Russia has opposed this move. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday, “This is illegal and cannot be implemented.” Lavrov said at the United Nations that he has written a letter to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, warning that recognizing the reimposition of sanctions would be a grave mistake.

While Iran has threatened a strong response to the sanctions, President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Friday that the country has no intention of withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Iran recalled its ambassadors stationed in Germany, France, and Britain for immediate consultations. Iran says the European countries have taken irresponsible steps that will further increase regional instability.
