Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee raised the question and issued a stern warning that if the name of even a single eligible voter is removed, one lakh people from Bengal will protest outside the Election Commission office in Delhi.

Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission over the announcement of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal. Banerjee claimed that this exercise was designed to exclude genuine voters and upset the political balance ahead of the 2026 state assembly elections.

He alleged that the Election Commission was hastily completing a massive two-year exercise begun in 2002, with the aim of taking control of the state administration and preventing the elected government from functioning.

“Who will vote and who will not?”
The Trinamool Congress’s national general secretary said that the Election Commission, an ally of the BJP, announced the SIR on Tuesday. This process is not about inclusion (names), but about exclusion. He said that the ruling party at the center is trying to decide who will vote and who will not.

Appeal not to flee the country
Appealing to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar not to flee the country if the government changes, Abhishek Banerjee said, “Wherever you go, I will find you and bring you back. You will have to answer to the public.” He said that SIR stands for Silent Invisible Rigging and argued that this process is not meant to include genuine voters, but rather a conspiracy to exclude them on political instructions.

Why was SIR announced for Bengal?
Sarcastically criticizing the timing of the voter list revision, Banerjee said at a press conference here, “Lok Sabha elections were held only a year and a half ago. If there are discrepancies in the voter list now, the Lok Sabha should be dissolved and fresh elections should be held.” She asked why SIR was announced for Bengal, citing the presence of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas? What happened to other border states?

Will protest outside the Election Commission office
The Trinamool leader questioned why West Bengal was targeted when five northeastern states share borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar. In a stern warning, he said that if even a single eligible voter’s name is removed, 100,000 people from Bengal will protest outside the Election Commission office in Delhi. Abhishek Banerjee said that despite the SIR, the party will increase its number of seats in next year’s assembly elections.
