The Indian Army announced on Wednesday (October 8) that two soldiers have gone missing in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district. According to the Army, the two soldiers went missing during an anti-terrorist operation launched on October 6-7 in the Kishtwar-Kokernag Range of the Chenab Valley. It is reported that two soldiers from the Kishtwar Range in South Kashmir lost contact with their team after being caught in a severe snowstorm and snowfall.
The Army stated that a search operation is underway for the soldiers, but bad weather is hampering the search. The two soldiers lost contact with their team during the operation in the high altitudes of the Kokernag region. The Srinagar-based Chinar Corps shared this information on its social media, stating, “On the intervening night of October 6-7, an operational team in the Kishtwar Range encountered a severe snowstorm and snowfall in the mountains of South Kashmir. Since then, the two soldiers have lost contact.” An intensive search and rescue operation has been launched, but is being hampered by adverse weather conditions.
Search Operations Continue to Locate Missing Soldiers
Officials said the search operation for the missing soldiers is underway on both sides of the mountains, from the Kishtwar side in the Jammu division and the Kokernag side in the Kashmir division. Six to eight inches of snow has fallen in the mountainous regions of South Kashmir over the past three days. Officials said security forces are investigating every aspect and have launched multiple operations in the inaccessible terrain and dense forests of Kokernag and Kishtwar. Officials said no contact had been established with the soldiers as of Wednesday evening.
Soldiers Lost Contact with Their Team Due to Bad Weather
Earlier, an official source stated that a massive search operation has been launched to locate the soldiers in the dense forest area. The soldiers may have lost contact with their team due to bad weather in the area for the past two days. It is being reported that the two soldiers may have strayed from their team due to poor visibility and difficult terrain caused by recent snowfall.
According to reports, these soldiers were part of a team that launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in the area last Tuesday. Since then, they have not been contacted. Helicopters have been deployed to assist ground troops in the search operation. The Army, other security forces, and local police are combing the forests to locate the two soldiers.
Operations to Eliminate Terrorists Continue
Joint forces, including the Army, other security forces, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, are conducting counter-terrorism operations against terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs), and supporters to dismantle the entire terror ecosystem in the Union Territory. Security agencies from both the Central and Union Territory are seizing assets belonging to terrorists, their OGWs, and supporters, as well as those involved in drug trafficking and smuggling. Security forces believe that money earned from drug smuggling and hawala money rackets is used to sustain terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
