Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky – Russia influenced members of the US administration through information warfare, convincing the US that Ukraine does not want to end the war

As part of Donald Trump’s efforts to establish peace in Russia-Ukraine, several rounds of talks have taken place between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia. Ukraine and many countries in Europe have alleged that Ukraine’s side is being ignored in this ceasefire. Now Ukrainian President Zelensky has made a big statement regarding this dialogue.

Vladimir Zelensky has claimed in an interview to Time Magazine that Russia has possibly influenced members of the US administration ‘through information’. Zelensky’s remarks come at a time when US President Donald Trump has acknowledged some of Moscow’s concerns about the root causes of the crisis. These include the Kremlin’s repeated criticism of NATO’s continued expansion towards Russia’s borders and opposition to Ukraine becoming a member of the bloc.

Zelensky expressed regret

Commenting on the recent Russia-US talks and especially the phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelensky expressed regret and said that the White House was accepting information coming from Moscow.

During a recent call, Putin told Trump that Ukrainian troops were surrounded in Russia’s Kursk region, but Zelensky has denied this claim. Zelensky told the magazine, “I believe that Russia has succeeded in influencing some people in the White House team through words. Their signal to the Americans was that the Ukrainians do not want to end the war and something must be done to force them.”

Every picture is about ‘victory’.

According to Time correspondent Simon Shuster, during the interview, Zelensky showed him three paintings hanging in a small room behind his office in Kiev. One of them, which was described as his favorite, shows the Kremlin engulfed in flames. He said that every picture is ‘about victory.’

The talks going on between American and Russian officials to end the Ukraine war and the Black Sea dispute in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, have been completed. In this meeting that lasted more than 12 hours, both sides have made progress on ceasefire efforts. According to Russian media, a joint statement regarding the meeting will come on Tuesday.

After this meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry released a short video in which the country’s negotiating team is shown coming out of the talks. Without giving any further information, the ministry said, “The Russian-American meeting is over.”

No high-profile document or agreement

Russian delegation member and senior diplomat Grigory Karasin described the Riyadh talks as not only ‘constructive’ but also ‘technical’. “There is no high-profile document or agreement in every meeting. The important thing is to maintain dialogue and understand each other’s position. In this regard, we are succeeding,” Karasin told the media during a break in the talks.

What was the issue discussed?

The meeting of US and Russian officials revolved especially around maritime security and the possibilities of reviving the Black Sea Initiative. The deal, popularly known as the “grain deal”, was originally brokered by the United Nations and Turkey.

Russia pulled out of the deal in July 2023, citing the West’s failure to fulfill its part of the deal. “If you recall the (original version) of the deal, there were significant obligations from our side that were never fulfilled. This remains part of the agenda,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said ahead of the talks.

Peskov also said US President Trump had proposed revisiting the deal in an effort to reach a ceasefire agreement.
