After the big tension between Israel and Hezbollah, the possibility of a big war on one side has increased. In recent days, while taking action against Hezbollah, the Israeli army has carried out several air strikes in Lebanon, in which dozens of civilians have also died. After Gaza, UN Chief Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the deaths of civilians in Lebanon.
On Friday, UN Chief Antonio Guterres said in his interview to Arab News that the world cannot allow Lebanon to become another Gaza. Last week, 37 people were killed and more than 3 thousand were injured in pager and walkie-talkie attacks in Lebanon, after which the firing on the Lebanese border has increased.
In recent days, the Israeli army has taken many actions against Hezbollah, after Israel’s pager and walkie-talkie attack, Hezbollah’s senior commander Ibrahim Aqeel was killed in an attack on a building in Beirut, after which regional tensions have reached a peak.
“The war must be stopped at any cost”
Antonio Guterres stressed in the interview that we must avoid a full-fledged war in Lebanon at all costs, we must stop the growing tension on this end. At the same time, we must stop the Gaza war. He expressed concern over the deaths and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, while urging to prevent Lebanon from becoming another Gaza.
This statement of Antonio Guterres came during the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations. This meeting is taking place at a time when the Gaza war is about to complete one year. Guterres admitted that this conflict has also exceeded his expectations of its duration and level of destruction.
“The Gaza suffering due to the October 7 attack cannot be justified”
Reiterating his strong condemnation of the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, Guterres again stressed that this cannot justify giving collective punishment to the Palestinian people. He said the United Nations has called for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid since the start of the war, adding: “It is impossible to persuade people who do not want to obey.”
