Today, the Indian Navy is going to get two sentinels of the sea, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri. Both warships will join the Indian Navy fleet today at 2.45 pm. This is the first time that two warships built in two Indian shipyards are being inducted into the Navy simultaneously. With this, India will have a three-frigate squadron which will showcase the country’s industrial technology and power through indigenous capability. On July 1, the Nilgiri class stealth frigate Udaygiri and on July 31, the Advanced Stealth Frigate Himgiri built under Project-17A were handed over to the Navy. Now today both these frigates are going to be commissioned in the Navy.
What is the specialty of indigenous warships?
INS Udaygiri has been built in Mazgaon Dockyard while INS Himgiri is built in Kolkata Shipyard. Such material was used in the construction of both these warships which is not easily caught by radar.
They weigh about 6,670 tonnes and are 149 meters long. Both these warships are as tall as a 15-storey building. Their speed is 52 kilometers per hour.
Talking about the range, after refueling once, they can travel a distance of more than 10 thousand kilometers.
These ships can carry Sea King helicopters for helicopter operations, which are capable of finding and killing submarines and surface ships.
These ships will be equipped with Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles, which are capable of attacking both sea and land targets from a distance of 290 km.
They have the ability to shoot down missiles and drones coming very close. Equipped with sonar systems, these warships can detect submarines in deep waters.
From the Arabian Sea to the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal, they will be able to keep an eye on the activities of both Pakistan and China.
These warships have been built with the help of more than 200 MSME companies…which has provided direct employment to 4 thousand people.
Navy’s strength will increase in the Indo-Pacific region
According to the Ministry of Defense, both these ships have been built under Project 17A. They are designed in such a way that they can avoid enemy radar, infrared and sound sensors. The deployment of both warships will increase the strength of the Navy in the Indo-Pacific region.
INS Himgiri has been built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) of Kolkata. Its name has been taken from the old INS Himgiri. At the same time, INS Udayagiri has been built by Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited of Mumbai. It is named after the Udayagiri mountain range of Andhra Pradesh, which was built in just 37 months.
