Union Home Minister Amit Shah has targeted Rahul Gandhi for criticizing the functioning of Parliament. He said that the opposition leader was in Vietnam during the time given to speak in the Lok Sabha. He has described the four percent reservation in contracts announced by the Congress government in Karnataka as a lollipop for Muslims.
At a program, the Home Minister said that any reservation on the basis of religion is a violation of the Constitution and the courts will reject it. He said that we completely oppose any kind of reservation on the basis of religion.
On condemning the functioning of Parliament, the Home Minister said that the opposition leader in the Lok Sabha probably does not know that there are rules for speaking in the House. One has to work according to those rules. They cannot be controlled as per one’s will.
They have to decide who will speak
He said that Rahul Gandhi was given 42 percent time in the discussion on the budget. Now it is up to him to decide who will speak on behalf of his party.
Home Minister Amit Shah said that when serious discussions were going on in Parliament, he was in Vietnam and when he returned, he started insisting on speaking as per his wish.
He said that Parliament runs according to rules and procedures, not like the Congress party, which is run by a family and where you can speak whenever you want.
When asked about the Congress’ allegation of emergency-like situation in the country, Shah said that the opposition party keeps criticizing the government. He said that if there was an emergency, he would have been in jail.
On the Congress’ demand for caste-based census, the Home Minister said that the opposition party itself had opposed such an exercise in the past.
I am not allowed to speak
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi accused Speaker Om Birla of not giving him a chance to speak in Parliament. Rahul Gandhi said that the functioning of Parliament is running in an undemocratic manner. In democracy, there is a place for the government and the opposition, but there is no place for the opposition in this House.
Rahul Gandhi said, there is a convention that the leader of the opposition is allowed to speak. Whenever I stand up, I am not allowed to speak. Here we are not allowed to say what we want to say.
