United Nations: Major Radhika Sen, an Indian woman peacekeeper who has served in the United Nations Mission in Congo, will be awarded a prestigious military award. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described her as a “true leader and role model”. Major Sen, who has served in the United Nations Organization Mission in the Republic of Congo, will be awarded the prestigious ‘2023 United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award’ by Guterres at the headquarters of the world body on the occasion of International United Nations Peacekeepers Day on May 30. According to a UN press release, Major Sen was posted in the east of the Republic of Congo from March 2023 to April 2024 as the commander of the Indian battalion.
Sen is the second Indian peacekeeper to receive the award
Born in Himachal Pradesh in 1993, Major Sen joined the Indian Army eight years ago. She graduated as a biotech engineer. When she decided to join the army, she was pursuing a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. She is the second Indian peacekeeper to receive this prestigious award after Major Suman Gawani. Major Gawani served in the UN mission in South Sudan and was awarded this award in 2019.
Major Sen’s reaction
Congratulating Major Sen for her service, Guterres said that she is a “true leader and role model. Her service is a contribution to the United Nations as a whole.” After the announcement of this award, Major Sen said, “This award is special for me because it recognizes the hard work of all the peacekeepers working in the challenging environment of the Republic of Congo and making their outstanding contribution to bring positive change in the society.” India currently has the 11th largest contribution of women military peacekeepers working for the United Nations.
