United Nations: Now World Meditation Day will be celebrated on 21 December all over the world. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution in this regard. This success has been achieved due to the efforts of India as well as other countries. Along with India, Liechtenstein, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mexico and Andorra were members of the core group of countries that played an important role in unanimously passing the resolution titled ‘World Meditation Day’ in the 193-member United Nations General Assembly on Friday.
Day of well-being and inner transformation
India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Parvataneni Harish posted on ‘X’ and said, “Day of comprehensive well-being and inner transformation! I am happy that India, along with other countries of the core group, guided the process of unanimous adoption of the resolution to declare 21 December as World Meditation Day in the United Nations General Assembly.” He said that India’s leadership for overall human welfare is based on “our civilizational principle – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”.
December 21 is the day of winter solstice
Harish said that December 21 is the day of winter solstice, which according to Indian tradition marks the beginning of “Uttarayana”, “which marks the beginning of an auspicious time of the year especially for inner contemplation and meditation”. He said that this comes exactly six months after the International Yoga Day. International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21, when the summer solstice occurs. Harish said that India played a leading role in declaring June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014. He said that in a decade it has become a global movement, due to which common people across the world are practicing yoga and making it a part of their daily life.
Message of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’
A press release issued by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN said that India’s key role in adopting the resolution on World Meditation Day is “a testimony to its firm commitment to holistic human welfare in line with our civilisational principle of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and to the world’s leadership in this direction.” The resolution presented by Liechtenstein was also co-sponsored by Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burundi, Dominican Republic, Iceland, Luxembourg, Mauritius, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Portugal and Slovenia.
