10 elderly people died tragically in a fire at a nursing home in Uruguay. The only caretaker survived the accident. According to an official statement, eight women and two men died in a fire at a six-room nursing home in the city of Treinta y Tres in the east of the South American country.

Seven people died on the spot

At the same time, seven residents died on the spot due to suffocation in the smoke, while three others were taken to the hospital in critical condition, but could not be saved. This incident happened just 10 days after a fire broke out in another nursing home for the elderly and people with mental disorders in the city of Melo in the east of Uruguay.

In that case, a 77-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman died in hospital after being evacuated along with 40 other residents. 16 percent of Uruguay’s 3.4 million population is over the age of 65, a proportion that is rising.
