Tsunami alert issued
It was felt about 270 miles (435 km) south as far as San Francisco, where residents felt a rolling motion for several seconds. It was followed by several smaller tremors. There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries. The tsunami warning was in effect for about an hour. It was issued shortly after the earthquake and covered about 500 miles (805 km) of coastline from California’s Monterey Bay north to Oregon.
Buildings shaken by earthquake
The earthquake was so strong that buildings shook. The area is known for its redwood forests, scenic mountains and the famous marijuana crop of the three-county Emerald Triangle. It was hit by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in 2022, leaving thousands without power and water. Seismologist Lucy Jones said on the social media platform BlueSky that the northwestern corner of California is the most seismically active part of the state because this is where three tectonic plates meet.
Warning to stay away from the coast
Soon after the earthquake, phones in Northern California buzzed with a tsunami warning from the National Weather Service, which said. Powerful waves and strong currents may affect shores near you. You are in danger. Stay away from the shores. Stay away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return. Many cities, including Eureka, have urged people to move to higher places as a precaution.
