The US has expelled South African Ambassador Ibrahim Rasool. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed regret over this decision of the Trump administration. According to a statement issued by the President’s Office on Saturday (March 15, 2025), he has appealed to all concerned and affected stakeholders to maintain established diplomatic etiquette in this matter.
The President’s Office said, ‘South Africa is committed to building a mutually beneficial relationship with the United States’. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday declared Rasool an ‘undesirable person’ on the social media platform X.
Rasool had made serious allegations against Trump
The South African ambassador had given a speech criticizing US President Donald Trump. According to news agency Xinhua, Rasool in his address accused Trump of leading a ‘global white supremacist movement’ and breaking established norms and practices in terms of diplomacy.
US Secretary of State calls him a racist leader
Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday called Rasool a “racist leader” who hates the US and President Donald Trump. “The South African ambassador is no longer welcome in the United States. We have nothing to discuss with him and therefore he is considered persona non grata,” Rubio wrote on social media platform X.
Rubio reposted a report by right-wing website Breitbart, which quoted Ambassador Ibrahim Rasool as saying Trump was leading a white “supremacist” movement.
Relations between the United States and South Africa are going bad. The period of tension began when Trump decided to cut US financial aid to South Africa. Trump is angry over South Africa’s land policy and its genocide case in the International Court of Justice against Washington’s ally Israel.
