US: Former Bangladesh Army chief Aziz Ahmed banned for involvement in corruption

The US has imposed sanctions on former Bangladesh Army chief Aziz Ahmed for his alleged involvement in corruption. The US has said that his actions have weakened people’s trust in Bangladeshi democratic institutions and government processes. Ahmed is an ally of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to a PTI report, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that the US State Department has today publicly announced the imposition of sanctions on former Bangladesh Army chief Aziz Ahmed for his involvement in widespread corruption. His actions have reduced public confidence in Bangladesh’s democratic and public institutions and processes.

Accused of helping brother

Matthew Miller further said that Aziz Ahmed committed major corruption by interfering in public processes to help his brother avoid accountability for criminal activities in Bangladesh. Aziz also worked with his brother to ensure that military contracts were awarded improperly. They could even take bribes in exchange for government appointments for their personal benefit.

What did the US say while imposing sanctions?

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that the US move reflects its commitment to strengthen democratic institutions and the rule of law in Bangladesh. The US supports anti-corruption efforts in Bangladesh by making government services more transparent and affordable, improving the business and regulatory environment, and assisting in capacity building to investigate and prosecute money laundering and other financial crimes.

Former army chief termed the allegations as false

At the same time, reacting strongly to the US move, Ahmed told the local media that the allegations for which he was banned are not true. He has been banned personally, but this move has hurt the image of the ruling Awami League government. This is because he held an important position during his tenure.
