Washington: A claim by former US State Department official Mike Benz has created a stir. According to a Times of India report, Benz has claimed that by using the influence of the media, promoting social media censorship and providing financial aid to opposition movements, the US tried to influence the politics of many countries including India and Bangladesh. He also claimed that the US also tried to influence elections and tried to destabilize governments.
Political stir caused by Benz’s claim
Amidst the ongoing controversy over USAID, Benz’s claim has created a stir. He says that the US spent a lot of money in this work. According to Benz’s claim, every effort was made to influence the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in India so that PM Modi’s party BJP could not succeed. He alleged that the US State Department had put pressure on various social media companies like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and Twitter to stop pro-Modi content. Let us tell you that USAID is an independent institution of the US government, which provides economic and humanitarian assistance in developing countries.
The situation in India’s neighboring countries was bad
Let us tell you that in the last few years, there has been an atmosphere of political instability in almost all the neighboring countries of India. There have been very dramatic changes of power in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party also fell short of a majority on its own for the first time in the last 3 elections. Recently, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had alleged that USAID had provided funds to many organizations to divide India. In such a situation, Benz’s claim that America had conspired to defeat PM Modi has strengthened Dubey’s allegations.
