US President Donald Trump, while referring to his good relations with India, said that the problem is that India is one of the countries which imposes the highest tariffs in the world. Know what else he said?

New York/Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that despite having a ‘very good relationship’ with India, the ‘only problem’ is that India is one of the countries that imposes the highest tariffs in the world. Along with this, Trump also reiterated his threat to impose retaliatory tariffs on imports from India from April 2.

Trump explained the problem
Donald Trump said this while discussing America’s relations with India in an interview with American news website ‘Breitbart News’. When asked about the summit held with Prime Minister Modi last month, Trump said, “I have a very good relationship with India, but my only problem with India is that it is one of the countries that imposes the highest tariffs in the world.” Along with this, the US President said, “I believe that he is probably going to reduce those tariffs to a great extent. However, on April 2, we will charge them the same duty that they charge us.”

Trump has called India ‘tariff king’

Trump has repeatedly criticized the high duty imposed by India on American products. He has said that India is a country that imposes very high tariffs. He has also described India as ‘tariff king’ in the past. During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Modi at the White House last month, Trump had also said that India has been very strict in the matter of customs duty.

‘No agreement yet’

The US President had said in early March that India had agreed to ‘significantly reduce’ its tariffs. However, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal told a parliamentary committee on March 10 that talks are still going on in this regard and no agreement has yet been reached between India and the US on trade tariffs.

America will impose retaliatory tariffs from April 2
President Donald Trump has called the tariffs imposed by many countries including India and China unfair and has announced retaliatory tariffs from April 2. He had said that America will impose the same tariffs on imports from other countries as they impose on American exports. Trump had said, “April 2 is a liberation day for our country. We are getting back some of the money that was given away by very stupid presidents because they did not know what they were doing.”
