Washington: The US Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a demand to ban a pill widely used for abortion. The Supreme Court unanimously said that anti-abortion groups and doctors challenging the mifepristone drug do not have legal grounds to bring the case. The special thing is that the right to abortion is one of the major issues in the US election and the Biden administration had urged the court to maintain the availability of the drug. The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the year 2000.

Meanwhile, regarding the decision of the Supreme Court, President Biden said, “The decision does not change the fact that the fight for reproductive freedom continues, the attack on abortion medication and the demand for a ban are part of a dangerous agenda.” Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, has expressed both “relief and anger” at this decision. Northup said, “Unfortunately, the attacks on abortion pills will not stop here, In the end, this decision is not a ‘victory’ for abortion – it simply maintains the status quo, which creates a serious health crisis.” What did the Supreme Court say During the hearing in the Supreme Court, Justice Brett Kavanaugh said, “We recognize that many citizens, including the plaintiff doctors, have serious concerns and objections about others using mifepristone and performing abortions.” Kavanaugh said, “But citizens and doctors do not have the right to sue simply because others are allowed to engage in certain activities.” He said plaintiffs “can present their concerns and objections to the President and the FDA in the regulatory process or to Congress and the President in the legislative process.”
Arguments in opposition
Several groups or organizations are seeking to restrict access to the abortion drug mifepristone in the US. They claim that it is unsafe and it is not easy for doctors to treat patients suffering from complications after it. Earlier, a district court judge in Texas had issued an order last year under which mifepristone was banned. The court had reduced the period of use of mifepristone during 10 weeks of pregnancy to seven weeks, banned its supply by post and made it mandatory that the pill should be prescribed and given by a doctor.
Restrictions removed
Now after the Supreme Court’s decision, these restrictions on the use of mifepristone have been removed. According to the Guttmacher Institute, medication-based abortions accounted for 63 percent of all abortions in the country last year, up from 53 percent in 2020. Polls show that most Americans favor continued access to safe abortions, while conservative groups are pushing to limit or ban the procedure outright.
