Washington: Tensions between the United States and Venezuela are escalating. Amidst this, US President Trump has taken a major step, ordering a complete blockade of all oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. This move is aimed at increasing pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Trump’s new measure is expected to severely impact the South American country’s economy.
US Military Seizes Oil Tanker
Trump’s action comes after the US military seized an oil tanker near the Venezuelan coast last week. This was an unusual move, following the deployment of military forces in the region. In a social media post announcing the blockade, Trump alleged that Venezuela was using oil to fund drug trafficking and other crimes. He stated that the US military deployment would continue.
Venezuela Surrounded
In a social media post, Trump said, “Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest naval fleet ever assembled in South American history. It will get bigger and they will suffer a blow like they have never seen before, until they return all the oil, land, and other assets they stole from us.”
What did Maduro say?
Meanwhile, President Nicolás Maduro praised Venezuela for proving itself a strong nation in the face of US pressure. Maduro said on state television on Tuesday, “Venezuela has been resisting, confronting, and defeating a multidimensional attack campaign for 25 weeks, which includes everything from psychological terrorism to the piracy of those who attacked the oil tanker.” He added, “We have sworn to defend our homeland, and peace and happiness for all will prevail on this land.”
Venezuela has oil reserves.
It is worth noting that Venezuela has the world’s largest oil reserves and produces approximately one million barrels of oil per day. The country has long relied on oil revenues for its economy. Since the US administration imposed oil sanctions on Venezuela in 2017, the Maduro government has relied on a clandestine fleet of unmarked tankers to smuggle crude oil and get it into global supply chains.
