District Magistrate (DM) Avinash Kumar said that a fire broke out in the NICU of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College at around 10.45 pm on Friday night. The children who were in the outer part of the NICU were rescued.

The DM said that so far 10 children have been reported dead. Avinash Kumar said that less serious patients are admitted in the outer part of the NICU while more serious patients are kept in the inner part.

16 children are undergoing treatment

Commissioner Jhansi Bimal Kumar Dubey, who reached the hospital around midnight, said that there were about 30 children in the inner part of the NICU and most of them were rescued. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jhansi Sudha Singh said on Saturday that the other 16 children injured in the incident are undergoing treatment. More than 50 children were admitted in the NICU at the time of the incident.

Jhansi police said in a brief statement on social media, a fire brigade was sent to the spot, while senior officials of the district also reached the medical college. A couple hailing from the nearby Mahoba district said that the child was born on November 13 at 8 am. The grieving mother said that my child died in the fire.

CM Yogi expressed grief

According to a statement issued in Lucknow, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the incident and directed the district administration officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured. He posted, the death of children in the accident in the NICU of the medical college located in Jhansi district is extremely sad and heart-wrenching. The district administration and the concerned officials have been instructed to carry out relief and rescue operations on a war footing. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. The statement said that CM Yogi directed Commissioner Bimal Kumar Dubey and Deputy Inspector General (Jhansi Police Range) Kalanidhi Naithani to submit a report on the matter within 12 hours. The district police chief said that 10 children died and others were either rescued or found injured, there was also information that some parents took their children home after the fire broke out in the NICU. He said the police were trying to verify the number of children admitted in the NICU and their current condition.

He said the medical college has reported that 52 to 54 children were admitted at the time of the incident. Of them, 10 died, 16 are undergoing treatment while verification of others is underway. “The rescue operation in the NICU has been completed,” he said at around 1 am. The government medical college started services in 1968 and is one of the largest government hospitals in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh.

All the officers including the DM are present on the spot. The incident happened around 10:30 pm. The DM said that all the injured children are being monitored. He also said that an investigation team has been formed which will submit its report.

Since the fire in the medical college, the family members are seen crying. A big team of doctors has been sent from Kanpur to Jhansi. On the instructions of the CM, Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak and Principal Secretary Health have also reached Jhansi.
