Uttarakhand: Uniform Civil Code implemented from today, major changes will be seen in all the rules including marriage, divorce, maintenance, property rights, adoption and succession, know

Dehradun: Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Uttarakhand from today. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami will make a formal announcement of this at 12.30 pm. In the order issued by Uttarakhand Home Secretary Shailesh Bagauli, it has been said that a web portal will be launched today regarding the Uniform Civil Code.

Along with launching the portal, CM Dhami will also release the rules of UCC. The Home Secretary has asked the Chiefs of all departments and police officers to be present in today’s program. With this, Uttarakhand will become the first state in the country to have a Uniform Civil Code. Let us tell you that the Uniform Civil Code covers areas like marriage, divorce, maintenance, property rights, adoption and succession.

What will change?

  • After the implementation of UCC, it will be mandatory to register the marriage.
  • There will be a uniform law of divorce for any religion, caste or sect.
  • The minimum age of marriage for girls of every religion and caste will be 18 years.
  • All religions will get the right to adopt a child, a child of another religion cannot be adopted.
  • Practices like Halala and Iddat will be stopped in Uttarakhand.
  • Marriage of second time while one husband and wife are alive will be completely prohibited.
  • Boys and girls will have equal share in property.
  • Registration is necessary for live-in relationship.
  • If the age of live-in relationship is less than 18 and 21 years, then consent of parents will have to be taken.
  • The child born from live-in will get rights like the child of a married couple.
  • Scheduled tribes have been excluded from Uniform Civil Code.

What is Uniform Civil Code?

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) means that there will be only one law for all the citizens living in the country, irrespective of their religion, caste or gender. As soon as it is implemented, uniformity is seen in all rights including marriage, divorce, live-in relationship, right to adopt a child. Then the rules cannot be different on the basis of religion.

BJP had promised in 2022
In the 2022 Uttarakhand assembly elections, the BJP had promised that it would implement the UCC in the state. After this, when CM Pushkar Singh Dhami took over the reins of power, the UCC proposal was approved in the very first cabinet meeting and permission was given to form an expert committee to prepare its draft.

Uttarakhand is the first state to implement UCC

Uttarakhand will become the first state to implement UCC today. Earlier, many states including Assam have also expressed their desire to adopt the UCC Act as a model. This step of the Uttarakhand government is historic as it will have a law for all the people of the state, which will give them a sense of equality. With this law, the state will get a new identity in the country and it will move towards the improvement of social and legal justice.
