A man from Jharkhand who had gone to Saudi Arabia to work as a laborer was shot and killed there earlier this month. This came to light when the Jharkhand Labor Department contacted the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to retrieve his body. Officials announced on Friday that a 26-year-old man from Dumri block in Giridih was killed in a shootout between police and an extortion gang in Saudi Arabia.
Officials and family members said he was shot when he was caught in the crossfire between local police and criminals involved in the illegal liquor trade. Giving further details, Labor Department official Lakra said, “We have immediately contacted the Indian Embassy and the Jeddah police in Saudi Arabia. Efforts are now underway to complete the legal procedures related to the death and bring the body back to his village.”
Sikandar Ali, a social worker, said Vijay Kumar Mahato had been working as a tower line fitter for a private company for the past nine months. Ali said, “On October 16th, he sent a WhatsApp voice message to his wife, Basanti Devi, saying he was caught in the crossfire and was injured.”

He further said that Devi informed his in-laws, but they thought he was undergoing treatment. On October 24th, the firm where he worked informed them that he had died in the crossfire. Ali also said that after learning about the case, he had urged the state labor department and the Giridih district administration not only to bring back the body but also to secure compensation from Saudi Arabian authorities for the victim’s impoverished family members.
How Vijay Came in the Crossfire
Speaking to the Indian Express, Mahato’s brother-in-law, Ram Prasad Mahato, said that the incident occurred on October 15th when Vijay was walking near his factory and was caught in the crossfire between the police and local extortionists operating in the area. During the exchange of fire, a bullet accidentally hit Vijay.
