Vikasnagar: Social reform decisions have been made periodically in the Jaunsar Bawar region of Dehradun district, Uttarakhand. Recently, in October, the people of Kandad and Indraoli villages in Vikasnagar-Jaunsar Bawar decided that women in these villages would only be allowed to wear three pieces of gold jewelry at weddings and other auspicious occasions. In this regard, the villagers have now taken important social decisions under the Khat Patti tradition.
What is the whole matter?
The Jaunsar Bawar region of Dehradun district is recognized worldwide for its unique culture. In this tribal community, people in the region frequently make unanimous social reform decisions to integrate even the most marginalized families into the mainstream. Continuing this trend, on November 20th, people from more than a dozen villages included in the Khat Patti tradition of Jaunsar Bawar held a meeting in Doha village, chaired by the village’s Sadar Syana (headman), Rajendra Singh.
Several decisions were made unanimously at the meeting, which will be implemented in all villages under the Khat Patti system. According to the decisions, weddings and other auspicious events in these villages will now be held with utmost simplicity. As part of social equality, expensive gifts will neither be given nor accepted at weddings and auspicious events. Furthermore, alcohol and fast food will not be served. Any family violating the rule will be fined one lakh rupees. Furthermore, no one from the village will be allowed to attend any auspicious event involving that family. Women will be allowed to wear only three pieces of jewelry at weddings and the Rayani Bhoj (a feast for married women): a nose pin, earrings, and a mangalsutra.
The following decisions were also made at the meeting: Alcohol and fast food items such as chowmein and momos will be banned from upcoming weddings and auspicious events. The maternal uncle will provide a goat, flour, and rice at the wedding. The practice of a married daughter giving a goat (from her in-laws to her parents) will be banned. Sweets and fruits may be given at the Rayani feast. Silver coins, dry fruits, and expensive gifts will not be given.
Earlier in October, a decision was made in Kadand village that women could wear only three pieces of jewelry at weddings and other ceremonies. On November 20, Kharsi village also took this decision, and now, under the chairmanship of Sadar Syana of the Khat Patti style, other decisions have also been taken unanimously.
