Washington: The sinking of China’s nuclear attack submarine in the sea has insulted Beijing. A senior US defense official said that China’s latest nuclear-powered attack submarine sank in the sea earlier this year. This is a matter of embarrassment for it, because it wants to expand its military capabilities. It wants to make its army the most powerful. But how can it fight anyone if it could not save one of its submarines?
This statement of the US official has exposed the hollowness of the Chinese military capabilities. The meaning is clear that the elephant’s teeth are different from what it eats and different from what it shows. China probably claims to have the most powerful army and the most advanced weapons to dominate other countries. But this one incident has exposed its truth. Let us tell you that China already has the world’s largest navy with more than 370 ships. Along with this, it has started the production of a new generation of nuclear-armed submarines.
How China’s nuclear submarine sank
It’s not just China’s nuclear submarine that has sunk, but all of its claims have also gone down the drain. A senior US defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said China’s first-class new nuclear-powered attack submarine sank near a pier sometime between May and June. A Chinese embassy spokesman in Washington said he had no information to offer on the matter. “We are not familiar with the situation you’ve described and we currently have no information related to it,” the Chinese official said. The official said it was not clear what caused it to sink or whether it had nuclear fuel at the time.
Questions raised on China’s internal defense industry
The sinking of the nuclear attack submarine in China has also raised questions about the credibility of its internal defense industries. “Apart from the obvious questions about training standards and quality of equipment, the incident raises deeper questions about the PLA’s internal accountability and oversight of China’s defense industry – which has long been plagued by corruption,” the official said. “It is not surprising that the PLA Navy would try to cover up the sinking.”
The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
A series of satellite images from Planet Labs show cranes at the Wuchang shipyard where the submarine would have been docked. As of 2022, China had six nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, six nuclear-powered attack submarines and 48 diesel-powered attack submarines, according to a Pentagon report on China’s military. The US Defense Department has said the submarine force is expected to grow to 65 by 2025 and 80 by 2035. China said it successfully carried out a rare launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile in the Pacific Ocean, adding to the country’s nuclear buildup. International concerns about the US are likely to grow.
