Malda: A case of clash between two communities has come to light in Mothabari area and surrounding areas of Malda district of West Bengal. After this, 34 people have been arrested in this case. Internet services have been suspended in the area. A large number of policemen have been deployed in the area. On the other hand, the Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police to file an action report on the violence by April 3. The court said that given the sensitivity of the matter, it is expected that the state should act with caution and take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of people affected by such violence.
Section 144 not imposed
On the other hand, state minister and local TMC MLA Sabina Yasmin said on this matter, “We have just completed a peace meeting between communities and groups. The meeting was very positive. We are confident that the situation will return to normal soon.” He said that despite the internet suspension, Section 144 (prohibitory order) was not imposed in view of the upcoming Eid and Ram Navami festivities. The minister said, “Due to the festival of Ram Navami and Eid, it was decided that Section 144 will not be imposed. But the police and administration have spread the message that no large crowd will be allowed to gather.”
Heavy police force deployed in the area
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Rajesh Yadav said that three companies of the State Armed Police and the RAF are keeping a vigil in sensitive areas of Kaliachak block. He said, “Our people are constantly exercising control over the area and police squads are moving around the entire area, including markets.” Apart from this, Malda Police wrote on ‘X’, “Apart from raids and arrests against those who spread chaos, police pickets have been strategically placed in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.” The post said that mobile units are active to respond immediately to any untoward situation, as well as forces have been deployed to strengthen the police presence.
34 people arrested
The district police said, “Patrolling is going on 24 hours and any information about possibility of disturbance is being acted upon.” Police said CAPF has not been deployed in the district. “So far six cases have been registered and a total of 34 people have been arrested. The situation is under control and strict police surveillance continues in the area,” police said. According to locals, the violence started on Thursday after a religious procession passed a place of worship on Wednesday evening. The violence led to arson, vandalism and attacks on people.
