Controversy erupted on Sunday over the remarks of Tapas Chatterjee, MLA of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, in which he criticized the movement of doctors and common people protesting the alleged rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, saying that “success will not be achieved by just clapping and dancing to the slogans being raised amid the music.” The protesting doctors strongly objected to Chatterjee’s remarks and said that this is a mass movement and its importance should not be undermined.
TMC MLA’s video goes viral
An alleged video of Chatterjee, MLA from Rajarhat-New Town, has surfaced, in which he is seen saying during a meeting held in his area, “No movement will be successful by clapping and dancing to the tune of a disco. A true movement is marked by more serious activities.” PTI-Bhasha could not independently verify the authenticity of the video. The doctors have been protesting outside the Swasthya Bhavan, the headquarters of the state health department in Salt Lake area for the past six days, demanding justice for the victim of the RG Kar incident.
Objection to MLA’s statement
During this time, they have been seen raising slogans, performing street plays and singing songs together. Expressing strong objection to the Trinamool MLA’s remarks, Aniket Mahata, an official of the Junior Doctors Forum, told PTI, “We are agitating to demand justice for the deceased and we are getting support from the common people. Our agitation will continue till our demands are met. The importance of our agitation should not be undermined.” Chatterjee could not be contacted for comment on the matter.
