West Bengal: The body of a 63-year-old man was found hanging from a noose in his house in Kolkata this morning. He was afraid that if NRC is implemented, he will be sent to Bangladesh.

The body of a 63-year-old elderly man was found hanging from a noose in the house on Sunday (August 3, 2025) morning in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. The family of the deceased claimed that the deceased was afraid that if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was implemented, he would be sent to Bangladesh.

A police officer in the case said, “Initial investigation has revealed that the deceased Dilip Kumar Saha came to Kolkata from Nawabganj in Dhaka in 1972 and was living in Anandpalli West in Regent Park area. Saha worked as a non-teaching staff in a private school located in Dhakuria, South Kolkata. Today on Sunday (August 3) morning, Saha’s wife called him several times, but there was no response from his closed room. After this, he called one of his relatives from the neighboring house. When they broke the door, they found Saha hanging from the fan. ”

He was under stress for quite some time- wife of the deceased

The deceased’s wife Aarti Saha said, “Her husband was worried that he would be sent to Bangladesh after the implementation of NRC.” She said, “He was under a lot of stress for some time about this. There was no other stress. He came to Kolkata in his childhood. He was afraid that he would be sent to a detention center and then sent back to Bangladesh, where he had no one. He had a valid voter ID card and other documents.”

The police officer said, “It is suspected that he committed suicide due to this fear. Apart from this, a suicide note has been recovered from the room. At present the matter is being investigated.”

Energy Minister and local Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Arup Biswas reached the spot and spoke to the family members. Biswas said, “The fear of being expelled from the country can also force a person to take such a step. What they (Centre) have started in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter list shows their anti-people attitude and the result is in front of you.
