WHO chief Tedros narrowly escaped, Sana’a International Airport was bombed; UN condemned the attack

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus narrowly escaped an aerial bombing at Yemen’s Sanaa International Airport on Thursday. According to information, at least two people were killed in this bombing.

Let us tell you, this bombing took place when Tedros was about to board a plane with his United Nations (UN) and WHO colleagues. One crew member of the plane was injured in this attack. In a post on X, WHO chief Ghebreyesus said that our mission to negotiate the release of UN staff detainees and assess the health and humanitarian situation in Yemen ended today. We continue to call for the immediate release of detainees. About two hours before we were about to take off on our flight from Sanaa, the airport was bombed by air. One of the crew members of our plane was injured. At least two people were reported killed at the airport. The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge where we were, and the runway located a few meters from there were damaged. We have to wait until the damage to the airport is repaired, only then we can leave from there. My UN and WHO colleagues and I are safe. Our heartfelt condolences to the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the attack.

 

Guterres condemned the attack Condemnation

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and called for respect for international law, stressing that civilians and humanitarian workers should never be targeted. In a post on X, Guterres regretted the recent escalation between Yemen and Israel and called the airstrikes on Sana’a International Airport, Red Sea ports and power plants in Yemen dangerous.

 

According to the UN chief, the airstrikes have reportedly caused multiple casualties, with at least three people killed and dozens injured. He reiterated the call for all parties to cease military action and exercise restraint. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the Israeli Air Force carried out attacks on Houthi military installations in the West Bank and inland Yemen. The attacks were carried out on Houthi military infrastructure, which is used for its military activities. The sites targeted included Sanaa International Airport and the Hejaz and Ras Kanatib power plants, as well as the Al-Hudaydah, Salif and Ras Kanatib ports on the western coast.
